Summer Marine Biology and Boating Programs
Register your child for summer programs in marine biology, boating, or canoeing at the Berkeley Marina.
The City of Berkeley runs summer recreation programs for children aged 5-16 out of the Berkeley Marina’s Shorebird Nature Center.
Summer recreation programs generally run from 9:30-12:00. Children ages 7 years or older can participate in the Adventure Playground drop-in program to make it a full-day adventure at the Marina.

Marine Biology
- Length: 4 half-days
- Ages: 5-14 years old
Participants will develop a deeper sense of nature appreciation as they explore the rocky shores and docks around the Berkeley Marina. Participants will use collecting equipment, nature guides and high-quality microscopes to study the organisms they find.
Canoeing
- Length: 3 half-days
- Ages: 9-16 years old
- Note: To participate in the canoeing program, you must get a water safety instructor to assess your child’s swimming ability and complete the proof of swim ability form.
Youth will learn basic strokes and canoeing safety. We will circumnavigate the inner harbor and practice in the shallows of the Bay with the exciting canoe-over-canoe rescue experience. Trained adults will monitor the children’s safety. Secure life jackets will be worn at all times.
Boating
- Length: 4 half-days
- Ages: 9-16 years old
- Note: To participate in the boating program, you must get a water safety instructor to assess your child’s swimming ability and complete the proof of swim ability form.
Partnering with local professional groups, youth will learn about different types of boats as we canoe, sail on small and large boats and paddle a Dragon boat. Behind the scenes tour of the Marina boat yards included. Trained adults will monitor the children’s safety. Youth will learn water safety, boating skills, and teamwork.
